Rise of the Tomb Raider coming to PS4 and PC in 2016

PS4 And PC Players Will Get To Play ‘Rise Of The Tomb Raider’ Soon Enough.

Since the announcement that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be sort-of exclusive to the Xbox One, Microsoft and Square Enix have played coy about what the boundaries of that exclusivity would be. The Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions will be released on November 10 this year, while the Windows 10 and Steam version will be released in ‘early 2016′. The concept of a timed exclusivity deal that applies to Xbox One and not PC is a little humorous, of course, offering a neat little representation Microsoft’s segmented businesses.

Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer have been working to increase communication and cooperation between Xbox and PC, but we still find ourselves in a situation where Microsoft has orchestrated a deal that explicitly forbids a particular game from coming to a platform that they own for a set period of time. The game will include a lot more survival elements than in the previous games, as players would have to hunt animals, skin animals, and search for items that would make Lara’s survival possible.

Tomb Raider managed to blend Uncharted-style gameplay with just a hint more exploration and a genuine mystery to be solved, bringing the classic character to a modern setting with some highly effective, if somewhat predictable, storytelling. Shenmue III and Street Fighter V, e.g., are also games from external publishers that are (at least sort-of) exclusive to PlayStation 4 but also arriving on PC. The growing expense and risk of developing a huge blockbuster game has clearly hit the hardware makers as well; neither Xbox One nor PlayStation 4 has a very good library of exclusive software yet.

Third-party exclusivity inevitably feels more punitive than anything else: that the main point of the deal is to keep a game away from certain players. Both parties have something the other needs badly: Microsoft and Sony need the lure of big franchises, and software makers need that sweet, sweet cash.
