Netflix has launched a virtual reality app.

Oculus VR chief executive Brendan Iribe announced on Thursday at Facebook’s FB Oculus Connect 2 Developers Conference that the app was coming to Rift headset, the commercial launch of which is due in early 2016. Oculus, the Facebook-owned virtual reality company, has partnered with 20th Century Fox to make movies available on its new VR cinema, Oculus Video, Fast Company reports. With the Oculus Rift coming onto the PC in 2016, and with Sony’s PlayStation VR for their PlayStation consoles, what will Microsoft get in terms of virtual reality?

The new Gear VR, like the previous model, will not have a built in screen or processor, but instead will hold any Samsung smartphone, which functions as the central brains and display for the unit.Los Angeles – Samsung and Oculus announced they have joined together to bring the Gear VR, a $99 virtual reality headset that will go on sale later this fall.

John Carmack, a developer working for Oculus and one of the people responsible for bringing the game into the platform, recounted how the deal between the two companies nearly didn’t happen. The last generation Gear VR, which a good proof of concept, was only compatible with one phone- the Note 4, which made it unavailable for most people. Should be a pretty simple port, considering what we saw running on Microsoft’s Hololens back in June, but still, it’s a big grab and an ideal showcase for the tech. In other words, it will be possible to simulate a full theatre experience for shows such as House of Cards or Orange Is the New Black from the comfort of your sofa. This is according to the folks at Polygon who recently spoke with Nate Mitchell, the VP of product at Oculus who also confirmed that there will not be Xbox One support at the start.

Though it is still in its early stages, virtual reality is seen as the next big thing in technology, and announcements by Hulu, Amazon and Vimeo that they plan to release apps for the Oculus suggest isn’t all hype. Viewers will be able to choose the size of the movie they want to watch, allowing them to opt for either a more casual, smaller screen or a theater-size experience. According to Mitchell, it seems to be about delivering an optimal experience. “What we were finding is that it’s hard enough to deliver a great experience reliably on Windows, never mind adding OS X and Linux to that, which are different beasts entirely.

So if I’m going to promise you something and you’re going to hand me a significant amount of money or whatever it is—we all know it’s going to be at least $300—if you’re going to hand me $300 today, I am not going to be excited to tell you: ‘OK, in nine, 10, 12, 11 months, whatever it is, you’re going to get something in return.’ The longer you wait, the more you’re like, ‘This is obnoxious.'” Unfortunately, despite the wonderful details that the company announced this week, there are still no news as to when exactly the specific release date of Oculus Rift is. While as far virtual reality content is concerned, Samsung announced that it has teamed up Twentieth Century Fox and Lions Gate Entertainment to bring content to its Gear VR, including blockbusters such as Alien Trilogy, Pulp Fiction along with the Hunger Games series. After Luckey broached the topic, Mojang’s Lydia Winters elaborated that the Windows 10 Edition of Minecraft will include Oculus capabilities sometime next Spring. “The name “PlayStation VR” not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this awesome experience”, Ito said.

Pandora CEO Brian McAndrews penned an op-ed at Billboard on the cost of “free” music, the role of discovery and the future of the subscription vs. ad-supported model. We’ve got a multiyear plan for this worked out over a fairly long time horizon.” said Mike Schroepfer, chief technology officer at Facebook to the Financial Times in an interview at the Oculus Connect developer conference in Los Angeles. Also announced was the company’s Oculus Touch system, designed to provide precise tactile feedback to wearers to further immerse the user in their virtual environment.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, told 1,500 attendees at the event he believed VR would become a dominant communications and entertainment technology while cautioning that early sales of the Rift may increase “slowly” when it goes on sale in the first quarter of next year. Further information on upcoming games and products are yet to be published, but it’s likely that with how popular VR is becoming, there are some products on the verge of being released. You’ll get to keep your current user name (as long as it doesn’t contain invalid characters, in which case you’ll have to go through a few extra steps to make the transfer), and all your old comments will eventually (not immediately) migrate with you. Oculus head of product Nat Mitchell and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg also explained the release strategy for the device and warned that uptake could be slow. “At the end of the day, I think that if you look at many of the most successful consumer hardware products of all time, most of them sold in the very low millions of units in their first year, especially new product categories, things like Kindle and iPod,” Mitchell told Gamasutra.
