Samsung goes big — really big — on tablets with the 18.4-inch Galaxy View …

Samsung unveils gargantuan 18.4″ Galaxy View Android tablet, designed for watching videos.

We had expected that the Galaxy View, first teased during Samsung’s IFA press conference in September, would be an attempt to rival the iPad Pro and Surface Pro 4, but we couldn’t have been more wrong. Rather than targeting business users, the Samsung Galaxy View is all about entertainment, featuring a video-optimised interface that puts Netflix and YouTube at the forefront of the tablet’s 18.4in 1920×1080 HD screen and “high-quality” stereo speakers. While the hardware itself is designed with videos in mind, the home screen also highlights a number of video platforms, including Netflix, Hulu, Twitch, Crackle, and YouTube — which suggests Samsung may have partnerships in place for this. Earlier this month, Acer launched a new all-in-one Windows desktop PC that had a battery built into it, while Lenovo launched the Yoga Home 900, an attempt at a portable desktop.

There’s even an carry case bundled with the tablet that comes with (you guessed it) its own handle for those situations where one simply isn’t enough. But Fuhu did tease a range of truly massive Android tablets at CES earlier this year, with sizes ranging from 20″ all the way up to an eye-watering 65″, though these have yet to find their way into the market. It has a 5,700mAh battery promising eight hours of life, Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity and a SIM tray for those brave enough to take the device into the wild. “At Samsung, we are committed to creating new possibilities and bringing our consumers the best mobile experience,” said J K Shin, CEO and head of Samsung’s IT & mobile business. “We are very excited to introduce the new Galaxy View, providing an entirely new way of consuming mobile video and entertainment.”
