Samsung Electronics seeks to block Nvidia chips.

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission seeking to block computer-graphics chips made by Nvidia Corp from the US market, Bloomberg reported. As companies faced with the prospect of having their products banned in the U.S. over a patent infringement complaint by an adversary are wont to do, Samsung has hit back at Nvidia with a sales ban request of its own. Samsung had accused Nvidia of infringing several of its chip-related patents and for making false claims about its products, counter-suing after Nvidia filed a suit against the company in September.

The request, according to the ITC, would extend to both Nvidia’s graphics cards and systems on a chip, which means it could conceivably impact both Nividia’s GeForce graphics card line and its Tegra mobile processors. Samsung, which had filed the lawsuit in a US federal court on Nov 4, is seeking damages for deliberate infringement of several technical patents, including a few that govern the way semiconductors buffer and use data.

The back-and-forth between the two companies began in September when Nvidia sued both Samsung and Qualcomm, alleging that the two companies infringed on some of Nvidia’s GPU-related patents. The Bloomberg report said that the ITC complaint also named computer-parts manufacturers Biostar Microtech International Corp and Elitegroup Computer Systems Co. It is asking the ITC to block imports of the latest Galaxy phones and tablets that use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon graphics processing units or Samsung’s Exynos processors. That lawsuit targets Nvidia’s Shield tablets. “We have not seen the complaint so can’t comment, but we look forward to pursuing our earlier filed ITC action against Samsung products,” Nvidia spokesman Hector Marinez said in an e-mailed statement.
