LaCie Confirms Two New HDs for CES 2015, Including Gorilla Glass-Rocking Mirror.

LAS VEGAS, Jan 04, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Today, LaCie, the premium brand from Seagate Technology plc STX, -0.72% unveiled the wholly encased in scratch resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass. We’re seeing a whole lot of peculiar and/or interesting technologies confirmed in the run-up to CES 2015, and one of these “oddities” is the new LaCie Mirror, a 1 TB hard drive that comes with Gorilla Glass protection.

[CES 2015] When it comes to form and function, finding the right balance between both is always a good thing – and this is why we were pleased to have crossed paths with the LaCie Mirror portable hard drive. LaCie™ Rugged RAID features twice the speed and capacity of a standard mobile hard drive* – all with the same Rugged portability and durability that enthusiasts have come to expect.

If this sounds a bit familiar, that’s because LaCie also unveiled artist collaborations at the 2013 and 2014 CES in Las Vegas, with last year’s reveal being a silver-plated, reflective 1 TB external drive. It is also the only product in its class to feature hardware RAID 0 and 1, which lets professionals optimize the product for speed or data security according to their workflow – and use it on any Mac® or PC.

As consumers increasingly back up their data to local SSDs and to cloud storage located elsewhere, one might wonder why consumers should continue investing in hard drives. This new signature piece for LaCie has been designed in collaboration with the acclaimed French designer, . “You have to look twice to discover the LaCie Mirror’s true ambition,” said Deltour. “Covered by mirrored glass, it’s first an elegant and functional object, and only on second glance is it revealed to be a slim high-performance hard drive.” Mirrors reflect the image of who we are, where as the data that we collect and create is a reflection of an individual’s ideas and experiences.

Not only is it a fully functional 1TB hard drive right from the get go, it would also make your desk space or work area a little less bland, and to have a wee bit more class than the rest of your cubicle mates. In an age where nearly all files are manifested in a digital form, it was an obvious conclusion for LaCie to develop a showpiece to convey how essential data is to defining our modern life.

Is that a compelling enough argument, or as venture capitalist Fred Wilson argued, did we truly “kill off the file” in 2014, replacing it with social networks and streaming services? Its rugged qualities are facilitated by an orange rubber encasing and an aluminum shell, while the drive is actually two 2 TB hard drives with RAID 0/1 options. Of course, it carries the well known damage resistance and toughness levels that ought to help provide you with additional peace of mind as you carry it around.

Seagate has found itself overtaken in recent years by Western Digital in terms of revenue and market share; WD now ships about 45 percent of the world’s hard drives. This should be a perfect product for graphics and audio professionals on the go, though like the Mirror, it won’t come cheap – pricing is set at $449, with a release date to follow sometime in Q1 2015. To make the product more durable, LaCie used with The glass is chemically strengthened and atomically configured to better survive the real-world events that most commonly cause glass failure. The Mirror’s mirror finish may be superfluous — even if the glass doesn’t shatter, dropping a hard drive on a hard surface is bad news — but the design is certainly eye-catching. And at one time, we might have called a product like the new Seagate Personal Cloud a NAS drive and been done with it; as more and more devices are becoming connected, however, wirelessly connected drives are gaining acceptance.

Seagate hasn’t what it will charge for the Personal Cloud, with single-drive configurations from 3 to 5 terabytes, and dual-drive (RAID 0, 1) configs from 4, 6, and 8 terabytes. Pauline Deltour based in Paris, studied applied art and design at the Olivier de Serres (ENSAAMA) in Paris and holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) also located in Paris. They will ship later this month. “Given the abundance of handheld computing devices there has been a trend of accessing content and content via cloud storage,” said Stephen Baker, vice president at the NPD Group, in a statement. Early in Deltour’s career, she worked as designer and project leader at Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design in Munich, and then opened her own studio back in 2009.

So whether the LaCie Rugged RAID takes a jarring jeep ride, is buried under stacks of suitcases in the airplane cargo hold, or gets splashed during a tropical downpour, the data remains safe and accessible. Like the existing WD MyCloud line, Seagate’s Personal Cloud uses a free Seagate Media app to securely access music, videos, and documents from the drive. You can stream to most smart TVs and Blu-ray players from LG or Samsung; to Roku, Google Chromecast, or AppleTV; and to iOS and Android phones and tablets, including the Amazon Kindle.

Pauline’s creative vision is now afforded to a wide range of commissions from industrial products and furniture through jewelry as well as public spaces. You can also set the drive to backup its contents to Amazon S3, Box, Baidu, Dropbox, Google Drive, and more; or else take what you’ve uploaded to that drive and store a local copy.

The hard drive industry has seen a shift from local drives tucked inside a PC to massive amounts of storage whirring away anonymously insider servers. Drawing on more than 160 years of materials science and process engineering knowledge, Corning makes keystone components that enable high-technology systems for consumer electronics, telecommunications, mobile emissions control, and life sciences. But Seagate is hoping to make hard drives sexy again by giving local storage all the bells and whistles of cloud storage, while simultaneously placing control of your data back into your own hands.. It also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets users password-protect the entire drive or only certain volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.

The included limited warranty provides comprehensive, complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support, and worldwide repair and/or replacement coverage. Actual data rates may vary depending on operating environment and other factors, such as chosen interface and disk capacity. © 2015 Seagate Technology LLC.
