Some tools to use on iOS 9

Hackers Found a Sly Way to Look at Photos on a Locked iPhone.

Apple’s newest iPhones are hitting store shelves this week. The new Siri in iOS 9 isn’t just a question-and-answer machine — she can predict what you want to do or who you want to talk to before you even ask. Characters Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” (Emmy-winner Uzo Abuda) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks) discover an Apple iPhone mysteriously waiting on a bunk in Litchfield Penitentiary, where they meet Siri. Many millions of older iPhones and iPads are also getting an upgrade, as the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 9, is now available. Since 2011, Apple has imposed a 70-30 cut on in-app purchase revenue, so if someone subscribes to Netflix for $7.99 per month from inside the iOS app, Apple will get 30 percent.

As the hackers show in a video below, you must enter the wrong passcode four times, and when you enter it a fifth time, you have to hit the home button immediately so that the phone does disable itself. HBO also inked a deal with Apple to allow for exclusive HBO Now sign-ups via Apple devices to start, though it has since branched out to Android, too. But on the TV you see a “spectator view,” which offers a different perspective on the gaming arena, allowing observers to say helpful things like “It’s behind you!” Air Wings is easy to learn and great fun to play alone or with live opponents over the Web. Instead, it is likely an acknowledgement of the growing mobile video viewing market, especially among youngsters who often prefer the small screen to a big one for watching movies and TV shows.

But while you were binge-watching Narcos and How to Get Away With Murder, Netflix was compiling data about which episodes were most likely to inspire a binge-watching session. By analyzing global streaming data across the inaugural seasons of popular shows—Netflix originals and network programs—the company determined which episodes helped launch full-on fandom. Hint: It’s not the pilot. “Given the precious nature of primetime slots on traditional TV, a series pilot is arguably the most important point in the life of the show,” Netflix CCO Ted Sarandos said in a statement. “However, in our research of more than 20 shows across 16 markets, we found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot,” he continued. “This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans are made.” Breaking Bad and Dexter, for instance, took about two episodes to hook viewers; Orange is the New Black required three. These act when you surf the Web, blocking the kind of behind-the-scenes code that websites use to track your online movements to serve you advertisements. The Dutch tend to fall in love with a series the fastest, while Australians and New Zealanders hold out for at least two episodes. “There’s a unique sense of intimacy with creating a show for Netflix,” said Marta Kauffman, writer and producer of Grace and Frankie. “Knowing you have an audience’s undivided attention and that in essence, they are letting these characters in their home, we unfolded storylines at a more natural pace.”

By using the app you can turn off advertisements and ad trackers and prevent websites from using external fonts and images (which have to be downloaded and can slow your browser). The app is a virtual reality guide to the stars: You hold your phone up to the sky and the app calculates what you can see overhead, then displays it with interactive graphics on the screen. On compatible iPads, Night Sky supports the device’s new multitasking feature, so you could use Night Sky in one window and do a search for more information on, say, Jupiter, in the other window. It also connects to Apple’s new Spotlight search system, so you can search for stars, constellations, and so on from outside the app, and then activate the app when you find something you like.

It offers powerful features like the ability to explore the sky view on your wrist, and it gets alerts when the International Space Station is going to fly over. The news app Flipboard is a great way to keep on top of what’s happening in the world because it aggregates all the news you know you are interested in from multiple sources.

BMW and Nissan roll out dual-plug EV chargers across the US

BMW and Nissan partner to create joint fast-charger network in the US.

BMW and Nissan announced Monday that they have teamed up to launch a public network of fast-charging stations across the country, challenging Tesla’s Supercharger network.CNN Money calls the Tesla Model X “the new king of crossover SUVs.” In its round-up of its favorite luxury SUVs of 2015, CNN places the electric ute on the top of its list.

The Model X’s EV powertrain, excellent acceleration and handling and cool design and technology features (including much attention paid to its slick Falcon Wing doors) earn it high praise. With dual 50 kW DC Fast-charging station with both CHAdeMO and CCS (Combo) connectors incorporated into each station, Nissan LEAF and BMW i3 drivers will be able to travel virtually range-anxiety-free. The breadth of Nissan and BMW’s fast-charger buildout is expansive, with fast chargers now available in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin.

These 50 kW stations can charge EVs from Nissan and BMW up to 80 percent in about 20-30 minutes, as compared to the longer time required to recharge at a Level 2 (240V) charger, currently the most commonly available public charging station. When the network will be completed, however, is not yet known. “Drivers can easily locate the chargers with ConnectedDrive in the BMW i3 — either using the in-vehicle Navigation or by using the BMW i Remote App — or via the Nissan EZ-Charge smartphone app,” read the joint press release. “Additionally, these chargers are compatible with the Nissan EZ-Charge cards.” This is a significant move. Since the launch of Nissan LEAF – the world’s best-selling electric car – Nissan has reinforced its commitment to zero-emission mobility with investments in EV charging infrastructure to serve the needs of LEAF drivers in markets across the U.S.

Nissan also recently introduced the new 2016 LEAF, which has available best-in-class range of 107 miles, making it the first affordable EV to get more than 100 miles on a single charge. All LEAF models feature an 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, providing a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience. BMW i is focused on the development of visionary vehicles and mobility services, inspiring design, and a new understanding of premium that is strongly defined by sustainability.
