Sony Alpha A68 camera hits US in April with 24MP 4D focus
Sony A68 Will Be Arriving In The US Next April.
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today introduced the a68 (model ILCA-68) camera with ultra-fast 4D autofocus to the US and Canada markets. While Sony has been heavily focused on its full frame mirrorless system, photographers had begun to wonder about the fate of Sony’s traditional a-mount DSLR lineup. The new camera, which was announced for the European market last month, is the latest model to feature native compatibility with Sony’s extensive collection of A-mount lenses.
This camera is specifically designed for newbie shutterbugs looking for a budget-priced DSLR, and at the time of its launch, Sony said that it would be out in the market by March 2016. Today, Sony reaffirmed its commitment to its a-mount line with the launch of the a68, a product initially announced only for European markets last month.
Inheriting many pro-style features from the acclaimed a77 II, the a68 features Sony’s unique 4D FOCUS system that delivers extraordinary AF performance under any shooting conditions – even in lighting as low as EV-2 where many other cameras struggle. Going back to the original Sony A68 announcement, it now seems apparent that the March 2016 release is for European customers after all; you may remember that Sony quoted prices in Euros, but not in dollars or any other form of currency. As for US pricing, it seems that it will be same the meaning that it will be priced at around $600f or the body-only, but if you want the kit lens you’ll have to pay $700 which will come with the camera and a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. The camera features a 24 MP APS-C Exmor CMOS sensor with a wide ISO 100 – 25,600 sensitivity range, allowing it to produce outstanding image quality for both still images and video. As an SLT (single lens translucent) camera, the A68 is one of Sony’s hybrid DSLRs that uses a translucent mirror instead of one that moves to reflect light onto the sensor.
Basic specifications of the Sony A68 include a 24-megapixel APS-C sensor, a 79-point phase-detection autofocus system, continuous shooting up to 8 fps, and a 2.7-inch TFT LCD display. The sensor is teamed with a powerful BIONZ X image processor that uses Detail Reproduction and Diffraction-reducing Technologies plus Area-specific Noise Reduction, resulting in pristine, finely detailed shots every time.
With Translucent Mirror Technology, shooters can enjoy non-stop continuous autofocus with accurate subject tracking during video shooting, producing crisp, professional looking footage. Framing stills and movies is a pleasure through the clear, bright OLED Tru-Finder, which features 100% frame coverage with high contrast and accurate color reproduction. Unlike rival cameras the Nikon D5500 ($700 body only) and the Canon Rebel T6i ($750 body only), the A68 has a top display panel and electronic viewfinder. Complementing the Tru-Finder, the 2.7-type LCD monitor tilts up to 135 degrees upwards or 55 degrees downwards for comfortable composition from a wide variety of shooting angles.
Serious photo enthusiasts will also value the backlit top display that allows quick confirmation of camera settings, whether shooting handheld or on a tripod. There is also a front control dial for quick adjustments of settings and a sturdy grip to ensure a balanced shooting experience, even when using heavyweight prime or telephoto lenses.
