Sony’s new smartwatch stays subdued while LG’s Watch Urbane Luxe goes glitz

LG Is Selling A Gold-Plated Version Of Its Watch Urbane Smartwatch For $1,200.

LG is billing the smartwatch as “more jewelry than wearable,” giving it an alligator leather strap and selling it in a “piano-gloss lacquer case” as its looks to target the high-end buyer. Android fans wanting a touch of gold with their smartwatch — a la the Apple Watch — may be interested to learn of a fancy pants version of LG’s Watch Urbane.

The LG Watch Urbane’s vanilla model was already huge, but for people who want their Android Wear smartwatch to be really eye-catching, the company is now offering a limited-edition 23-karat gold version for the low low price of $1,200. Each of the 500 limited edition timepieces will be engraved with its own serial number for authenticity and available initially in the US for pre-order Reeds’s website.

The LG Watch Urbane Luxe offers exactly the same technical specs as the regular Urbane, released earlier this year, but attempts to justify its pricetag with a gold body, a strap made of alligator leather, and an “exclusive” shiny lacquer case. “Wearable devices shouldn’t be thought of as an extension of one’s smartphone but an extension of oneself,” says LG’s Chris Yie, apparently indicating that the only people who’d buy the Urbane Luxe are coated in gold and clad in alligator skin. In March, Apple unveiled the 18 karat gold Apple Watch Edition to draw luxury buyers to its wearable product. “This blending of craftsmanship and technology is a natural evolution of the smartwatch, which is becoming more of a lifestyle accessory than a piece of hardware. It will be showcased at the IFA electronics show in Berlin this week and is available for pre-order on Reeds’ site now, though the actual product — the 500 of them being made — won’t ship until October. We think this is a good direction for wearables and we want to encourage this transformation,” Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing for LG Mobile Communications Company, said in a press release.

Shipments in the second quarter came in at 18.1 million units, up about 223 percent from 5.6 million units during the same period last year, according to market research firm IDC.
