Startup Z takes on GoPro with interchangeable-lens E1 Camera

Meet E1, the world’s smallest interchangeable lens camera.

Digital imaging startup “Z” has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the commercialisation of the E1, a diminutive 4K video camera with a FourThirds sized imager and an MFT lens mount.

But there’s always improvements to be made, and Panasonic is hoping to sell not just more cameras, but more lenses by adding six axes of camera shake correction to its latest compact Lumix GX8. Advanced 3D noise filters using motion compensated temporal filtering (MCTF) technology reduce noise and jitter, promising “incredible low-light performance” with a top sensitivity of ISO 102,400/51°. The GX8 already sounds like an impressive piece of kit, combining a 20.3MP sensor, 4K video recording at 24fps, and 4K photo capture with a large OLED live view finder, low-light auto focus, and a splash and dustproof exterior.

It’s no gimmick — despite its size, the camera is capable of 4K video at 24 fps, 16 MP stills, supports 25 fps and 50 fps shooting, and has slow-motion 720p shooting at 120 fps in the works. Once the Kickstarter campaign has been completed, the E1 will retail for $699 in a body-only configuration, as well as in a kit with a 14mm f/2.5 lens for $999. There are, however, a couple of gems out there such as the awesome Panasonic Lumix 20mm f/1.7 pancake lens and the Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm f/1.8 portrait lens that would complement the E1 nicely. In lieu of bulky DSLRs, this camera will allow users to travel with their arsenal of lenses to capture the highest-quality footage possible, revolutionizing the quality of content consumers can produce and easily share.

If you’re interested in securing an E1, you’ll need to drop down $599 which doesn’t include a lens (the Panasonic 20mm and Olympus 75mm I mentioned earlier are both excellent lenses, as is the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro). Users can leave the camera in standby mode and remotely power the E1, whether it’s powered on or off, a feature not available with most other camera models.
