Street Fighter V lets players earn Fight Money for downloadable content

‘Street Fighter V’ will get new characters, but you’ll have to fight for them.

The popular fighting-game franchise will avoid releasing new updated games after its original release, series producer Yoshinori Ono announced on Saturday. Previous entries had full-game updates, as Capcom added changes and new fighters; there was 2008’s Street Fighter IV, 2010’s Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition later that same year and finally, Ultra Street Fighter IV in 2014. On the other, being able to earn new characters through gameplay was one of my favourite aspects of earlier fighting games, and it’s nice to see that return, after a fashion.

This shows a move in its business strategy, one that previously required players to purchase not just DLC characters, but also possible patches and updates to the game to stay “tournament ready”. Alternatively, if you don’t have the necessary Fight Money, and don’t want to wait to grind it out, you can purchase individual characters with a premium currency called “Zenny” which costs actual cash. Given the recent news that Capcom will be releasing classic Street Fighter character costumes, the Street Fighter 5 experience should be the franchise’s most accessible and customizable. “Essentially, what we did over time with Street Fighter 4 is made our player pool smaller and smaller by eliminating people who didn’t purchase the upgrades”. The tournament’s organizers will be live-streaming on Twitch (embedded above) with some excellent commentary from the fighting game community’s most recognizable names. “For instance”, Dahlgren continued. Ono and Capcom made the announcement on Sunday during the Evolution Championship Series (EVO), the world’s largest fighting-game tournament held annually in Las Vegas.

Capcom says this will ensure there’s always something to look forward to, and the regular addition of new characters will keep the competitive scene fresh.
