The cities that could get Google Fiber next

Google Fiber TV and Internet go dark in Kansas City during Royals’ World Series opener (updated).

Google threw Kansas City viewers another curve ball Tuesday night when its ultra-fast Internet and TV service went down during the first game of the World Series.

Google Fiber apologized for the video outage in Kansas City, where the hometown Royals hosted the New York Mets during baseball’s championship series. “We’re so sorry about the outage in KC. We apologize for this interruption on an important night.” The Internet problems coincided with an interruption to Fox’s TV broadcast which resulted in viewers missing part of one inning. Google Fiber service was later restored, customers reported on Twitter, while Fox addressed the outage after a temporary switch to different announcers “We know it couldn’t have happened at a worse time,” a verified, four-year-old Twitter account named ‘Google Fiber’ wrote in a post on Tuesday night. All service was restored by 10:15pm local time.” In addition, before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning, Fox’s national broadcast was disrupted.

Google Fiber is ultra-fast Internet service, which offers speeds of one gigabit per second, about 100 times as fast as the average broadband connection in the USA, and customers can use it to watch TV channels and live broadcasts such as those from the MLB Network. Google will work with local officials to determine whether each city is capable of adding Google’s fiber optic network to its existing infrastructure before moving ahead with implementation. The service, with an estimated 27,000 video subscribers in the Kansas City area, has been expanded to only a handful of cities, including Austin, Tex., and Provo, Utah. Google Fiber went down right before Fox’s primetime broadcast feed suffered a disruption of its own due to “a rare electronics failure,” Fox Sports said in a statement.

Some local and national advertisers — like Twitter — with high-priced ads scheduled to run during the game might have some hard feelings toward Google Fiber, too.
