‘The Flock’ Is A Multiplayer Horror Game That Shuts Down When Everybody Dies.

is an interesting concept. It’s a near impossible task to find a new way of innovating gameplay these days, but developer Vogelsap might be on to something when they announced that “The Flock” will use fear of never playing it again. Regardless of knowing this reality, saying “lets have sex until the monotony of it all leads me to seek greener pastures” doesn’t get me laid, and admitting your game will only be playable for so long has the same effect. They first design a game that can be played over and over again, and second they release numerous games under the umbrellas of their more successful games in order to keep fans happy and generate sales. The twist therein is that once someone has achieved the game’s ultimate goal, it will be taken offline, and that’s it – it won’t go back online for a second play-through, and would be gone for good.

It’s a tough market to break with famous names and grand companies pulling out big titles with complex gameplay, intricate characters and unbelievable graphics. Only players who own the game will be able to take part in the game’s “climactic finale”, and after the game ends, it will no longer be available for purchase. The new game entitled with “The Flock” enters into the gaming industry with a new look for shelf life, and changes the perspective what we look at the shelf life. This multiplayer game will have you competing against others, with all of you playing collectively as the titular Flock, a monster in search for the Artifact.

Dutch development studio Vogelsap seems to get this, and is taking an unusual approach to multiplayer game design with their debut project, The Flock. Players only being able to partake in this now strengthens these design goals and creates authenticity. “In opposition to other multiplayer games, we want The Flock’s experience to inspire a sense of awe, to keep players eagerly anticipating what is coming next and to end with a memorable climax”, but what say you?

Dutch game developer Vogelsap has created a game in which once all the players of the game dies, the game shuts down forever with no chance of redemption or sequel in sight. Once someone holds the Artifact, that transforms them into something else, and your goal is to hang on to that item for the longest time possible, using its light to stave off Flock monsters. A first-person horror game set in a ruined Earth, players assume the role of wretched creatures roaming the surface (known collectively as “The Flock”), drawn toward an artifact which will either transform or destroy them.

Asymmetrical multiplayer is all the rage these days, thanks to games like Evolve, but the staying power of such titles is unproven, with the player base of Evolve dropping radically since launch. “A multiplayer game can take players to incredible heights, but at some point gamers will start to play less, get disinterested and stop playing altogether”, said Jeroen Van Hasselt, Vogelsap’s creative director. Players will continuously switch between being the hunter and the hunted creating an experience of vulnerability that will terrify even the most seasoned of horror gamers.

The Flock is an asymmetrical (the Evolve flashbacks are strong) first-person horror multiplayer title that pits groups of grotesque monsters against a single, light-wielding Carrier. This will go on until the game’s epic conclusion, whereupon it will shutdown. “We want the game to have a climactic finale after which people will fondly remember the game, instead of it to slowly wither away,” the developer told Eurogamer. Once you die, you could be out forever, and the only way to ensure that the game doesn’t end is to keep as many members of the flock alive as possible. The Flock will be the first game that the team releases publicly although they have been developing together for years, according to their website, “Starting out with six people and a small office at school, The Flock was in development during the three month school project.

The player that reaches the glowing Orb first is transformed into a human-like character, the Carrier, that must then carry the Artifact around with them. Vogelsap (Bird juice) is a Dutch indie studio dedicated to developing immersive and tense multiplayer experiences that are unconventional and surprising in every facet, from gameplay to availability. Information has been a slow trickle from Dutch developers Vogelsap, with the last information I personally recall pertaining to the basic gameplay elements. There is the additional possibility that imitators may attempt to follow in the footsteps of these innovators and create a game similar to The Flock, but with a longer time line, for those who love The Flock and want to keep playing after it ends.

As you can imagine, stealth movement is crucial to success although there are some other tricks in the monster’s arsenal to help them along (decoy statues, for example).
