LG Display to Invest More in Flexible Screens.

LG Display, a key screen supplier to Apple Inc. and LG Electronics Inc., 066570 -1.95 % said in a regulatory filing it will invest 1.05 trillion Korean won ($907 million) in the new facility over a two-year period starting in the third quarter. In addition, LG Display signed a MOU on OLED investment and administrative support with the Gyeongbuk Province and Gumi City governments on July 23, with the company having been promised to receive administrative service support from the local authorities. LG’s aggressive investment in flexible displays for mobile devices signals a potential broad shift in smartphone screen designs away from familiar rectangular flat screens.

The Paju facility makes large-size OLED panels for TVs and those used in smartphones, while most of the smaller OLEDs for wearables and vehicle parts are produced in Gumi. SSNHZ 0.00 % ’s display unit, Samsung Display Co., are the world’s top two display makers and the only companies that are capable of commercially producing such displays, albeit in small volumes thus far. Apple was said to be actively exploring flexible OLED screen panels for future iPhones, and LG might look to ensure it would be able to ramp up capacity when the time came.

LG Display aims to lead the flexible OLED market by offering customers differentiated value, with the accumulated technology skills from large-size OLED display production applied to flexible OLED displays. The world’s biggest maker of liquid crystal displays (LCD) later said April-June operating profit tripled on year, marginally exceeding analyst estimates.

But Samsung’s display unit has struggled to meet demand for the curved screens in the early stages due to manufacturing difficulties, dealing a blow to Samsung’s profits.
