This Xbox Bundle Comes With a Crazy New Controller

Microsoft announces $499 Xbox One Elite Bundle with hybrid hard drive.

Upgrading the Xbox One’s storage space became a non-issue when Microsoft added support for external hard drives a while back, but slipping a tiny hard drive inside the black box to reduce clutter and prune your power strip? Microsoft says the new SSHD hard drive means you’ll get into games 20 percent faster than the original Xbox One console and it automatically optimizes games and apps to open faster.Microsoft announced a pricey new Xbox One Elite Bundle Monday that’s geared to the most hardcore of gamers with a top-of-the-line controller and hard drive.

Lunar White will be a standard Xbox One controller and won’t boast the company’s Elite controller’s features but it will be exclusive to GameStop for US$65. Instead of simply popping a 1 terabyte hard drive in the box, hiking the price and calling it a day, Redmond’s gone a step further and upgraded the classic cylinder-based drive to a solid state hybrid version. The new One isn’t the first to boast 1TB of storage — Microsoft officially announced a new iteration with a terabyte of storage at E3 — but this is the console’s first hybrid drive with that much space. The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller also works with Windows 10 devices and introduces new paddle shifters on the back of the controller which can be remapped from buttons on the front so you don’t have to take your thumbs off of the joysticks to click something. That means the drive has a small solid state partition (generally much faster than cylinder storage) on which it’ll store your most frequently accessed files, reducing metrics like load times as well as energy usage.

Towards the end of September, Microsoft also confirms that it’s going to debut an Xbox One Special Edition Lunar White wireless controller, which features a white and gold color scheme. The Elite Controller, however, is definitely the draw for this bundle, since it adds new features like Hair Trigger Locks and stainless steel paddles in its design. It’s obviously made of high-quality materials, but it remains to be seen whether that fixes the general issue with all Xbox controllers, in that some button(s) or stick(s) will wear down with use, requiring a new controller purchase.

Microsoft says it will sell the system for $499 in the U.S. exclusively through GameStop and Microsoft Stores starting November 3 (GameStop’s annual expo runs this week, thus the announcement timing). This includes a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, improved bumpers, and the ability to update the controller firmware wirelessly instead of plugged into the console via a USB cable.

Microsoft also boasts the new Lunar White controller features “improved grip texture for more control and comfort.” It’s hard to describe the Xbox One as anything other than bundle happy currently. In addition to the Elite bundle announced today, there is the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition bundle, Madden NFL 16 bundle, Forza Motorsport 5 Limited Edition bundle, and a Halo 5: Guardians Limited Edition bundle.
