Swipe Right? Check Out Tinder Users’ Instagram Pics First.

Simply open Tinder, go to your new profile, and connect it to your Instagram account with a single tap – your Tinder profile will automatically start displaying your recent Instagram photos. Tinder released an update today that integrates directly with Instagram, letting users scroll through the Instagram profiles of their potential matches within the app itself. The new feature underscores how some teenagers and young adults are gravitating from Facebook to newer apps such as Snapchat and Facebook-owned Instagram.

When a user reaches this limit, the app tells them ‘You’re Out of Likes’, and gives a countdown clock until 24 hours are up so they can start swiping again. Tinder now also supports common connections, letting users see the degree to which they’re separated from a person based on the social graph, as well as presenting all Facebook interests instead of just common interests.

While many have chosen to add their Instagram handle to the Tinder profile in the past so that potential lovers could check them out, something about the new updates seem to push the envelope a bit on user privacy, despite the fact users are willingly granting access. This means some users will pay £17.88 a year for Tinder Plus – but others, in the upper price category, will have to fork out a whopping £179.88 a year. The goal of the changes is to make it easier for users to get to start conversations with potential matches, says Tinder’s president and cofounder Sean Rad. “It will help you better understand who the person is that you’re talking to,” Rad told Mashable. “When you’re able to asses the degrees of separation between you and an individual it adds a lot of value in the form of context, trust and everything.” Profiles with connected Instagram accounts will display the most recent 34 recent images, which also link to the main Instagram app. For Tinder, the Instagram link is one of several new additions announced Wednesday that the West Hollywood company hopes will keep users engaged even as an onslaught of competitors tries to win them over. Until now pictures on Tinder profiles were limited to those selected by each user from Facebook, greatly limiting the number of images you could see from a potential date.

Speaking to MailOnline, Rosette Pambakian, Vice President of Communications and Branding at Tinder, told MailOnline the app is testing out different price points ahead of a global release. So if a carefully curated profile picture isn’t enough to make you to swipe right, maybe those blurred pics of her dog, or the masterfully framed snapshot of his muscle car will do the trick. “And in case you were wondering, Tinder won’t post anything to Instagram on your behalf or alter your existing Instagram privacy settings,” Tinder said in a blog post.

According to Tinder president Sean Rad, a “substantial percentage” of people on the popular dating app already list their Instagram handles in their bios. Match-seekers will be able to see friends of friends that they share in common with other users and they’ll be given someone’s complete list of interests as opposed to only those that are mutually shared. “We’re listening to our users, our vision,” Rad said, noting that the new features should lead to more fruitful connections among the 26 million pairings on the app each day. “What they all miss is this is about a community, and Tinder’s users define Tinder’s success, not Tinder’s features,” Rad said. “Everyone is on Tinder. Tinder’s integration of Instagram seems like an appropriate evolutionary step since a large majority of users already include their Instagram aliases in their Tinder profile. According to the company’s blog post, users can now choose to directly connect their Instagram profiles to Tinder, which will add your 34 most recent Instagram pictures to your public profile.

In addition, Tinder has not commented on whether a user will receive a refund if they ultimately paid over the odds for the final price of the service. For users who have private Instagram accounts, they will be presented with an option to grant Tinder access, which would make your Instagram public on Tinder only. The cool kids are on Tinder, so if you really want to unseat Tinder, you need to do something 10 steps better and I’ll welcome that.” Recently, Tinder begin charging users for extra features including ad-blocking. In this way I suppose it puts the Tinder user at a greater advantage, in that they have 34 ore opportunities to show off their best side and possibly hook a match.

Meanwhile, Tinder will also tap into Facebook to list a user’s favorite things; common interests will automatically be highlighted for speed dating purposes. “Your brand new profile is waiting for you,” Tinder said on its blog. “Just open Tinder now to check it out (or update the app if you haven’t already). The updated Tinder also adds common connection information into the mix, letting you see that you share a mutual friend with a match (first degree) or that you and your match have two separate friends who happen to be friends with each other (second degree). Instagramers with private profiles will have the option to make their Instagrams viewable via Tinder, even if the viewer hasn’t matched them or isn’t already a follower on Instagram. Essentially, what LinkedIn usually refers to as second- and third-degree connections, Tinder calls first- and second-degree connections, respectively. Rad called it a success based on how many people watched the entire video, clicked on a link in the ad and approved of it by swiping right in the app.

In addition to linking your Instagram profile with your Tinder account, the company has also linked in a lot more information about your likes and friends derived from Facebook. Tinder will show you if you and a match have common Facebook friends (first degree), and it will also show you if a friend of yours is also a friend of a match’s friend (second degree). This could be useful if you are looking to avoid hooking up with the close friend of an enemy or knowing with which circles you will be hanging if your new crush becomes something more serious.

He adds that what keeps his competitors at bay is that they fail to see the Tinder community and fail to recognize that it’s the app’s users, not features, that keep it on top. If common interests or extreme distain for certain things plays a big role in the kind of person you choose to heat things up with, then this new feature may seem really useful to you, but to me it just feels like it could someway be used to target certain individuals in a bad way. It is responsible for 26 million matches every day and while it has met its share of competitors, none of them have proved to be any real threat to Tinder. The company also shared that an App for the Apple Watch has already been created and will be launching very soon – we imagine in time for the first adopters who will receive their new watches on April 24.
