NVIDIA Initiates Safety Recall of SHIELD Tablets.

NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) today announced a voluntary recall of its SHIELD™ 8-inch tablets that were sold between July 2014 and July 2015, which the company will replace. The update weighs in at 767MB and contains the latest Lollipop tweaks as well as NVIDIA’s own bug fixes, performance improvements, and system wide optimizations.

Nvidia has recently announced that customers who purchase its SHIELD tablet can now download and install Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is the last version of Google’s operating system. If you’ve got an NVIDIA SHIELD tablet, grab it and follow these steps to see if your device is affected: If you’ve got a “Y01” model, tap that number to launch the recall application. According to Nvidia, the battery in these tablets can overheat and pose a fire hazard, which is why the company has confirmed that it will be replacing all these tablets. “NVIDIA is asking customers to submit a claim for a replacement device. However, models with a Y01 battery will need to replaced. “Nvidia is also asking consumers to stop using the recalled tablet, except as needed to participate in the recall and back up data,” the company added. “Consumers will receive a replacement tablet after registering to participate in the recall.”

This is a pretty serious issue that NVIDIA has found with certain SHIELD tablet models, but at least the company appears to be making the recall process simple with a clear website and built-in recall app. The company’s technologies are transforming a world of displays into a world of interactive discovery — for everyone from gamers to scientists, and consumers to enterprise customers.
