ITC judge rules Samsung, Qualcomm didn’t infringe Nvidia’s GPU patents (updated).

A US International Trade Commission judge said in a preliminary ruling on Friday that Qualcomm and Samsung did not infringe on two Nvidia patents, according to a report at Reuters. Nvidia Corp lost the first round of its royalty dispute against Samsung Electronics Co and Qualcomm Inc after a US trade judge said there was no violation of the graphics chipmaker’s patent rights.ITC administrative law judge Thomas Pender has ruled Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) didn’t infringe two Nvidia (NVDA -0.4%) GPU patents asserted by the latter. Nvidia, which claimed to have invented the first graphics processing chip and released it in 1999, accused Qualcomm of infringing patents in the Snapdragon processor line-up, and Samsung in its Exynos processors and several of its products, including Galaxy smartphones and tablets. Nvidia spokesman Robert Sherbin said the ruling will be reviewed by the full commission, which will make a final decision on the dispute in February. “We remain confident in our case,” he said.

The case is over chip innovations that make graphics processing units, or GPUs, more efficient and more capable of supporting complex functions for smartphone and tablet users, such as video gaming and playing movies. The Samsung products targeted in the complaint include the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 phones, and the Galaxy Tab S and Galaxy Note Pro tablet computers. Samsung went after Nvidia in November, claiming that the GPU maker was making false claims about Tegra K1 benchmark scores and that it shouldn’t be labelled “the world’s fastest processor”.

By going after Samsung, Nvidia is trying to demonstrate to other potential licensees that its intellectual property has value and they need to pay for it. If they agree, the ITC would issue an order that would preclude Samsung from importing into the U.S. infringing Samsung mobile devices and smart TVs.”
