GameStop selling new 2TB PS4, trumping new 1TB model from Sony.

Sony sold 3 million PlayStation 4 consoles over the last quarter, from April to June. The PlayStation Plus service is one of the most compelling deals in the console gaming industry, as not only does the subscription offer multiplayer access on PS4, but it also brings different other features, chief among which being the Instant Game Collection.

That’s up from 2.7 million at the same time last year and, more importantly, it’s more than double the 1.4 million sold by the Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined. The PS4 supports customized hard drives in addition to the 500 gb one that comes with the system, and Gamestop is taking advantage of that fact as part of their “premium refurbished program.” They’re selling what they call a “supercharged” PS4 for $479.99 that comes with 2 TB of storage: 4 times what you get from a new system.

According to Sony’s report, the performance of the PS4 and software sales for the console contributed a “significant” increase overall for the Game & Network Services division. It’s nothing you couldn’t do on your own, but a lot of people get jittery about poking around inside their expensive electronics, and this is a pretty straightforward alternative. Well, if you want more storage GameStop has you covered, it’s selling “Supercharged” units of the PlayStation 4 from its “premium refurbished” stock with 2 terabyte hard disk drives. Sony released the 1 TB “ultimate player edition” in Europe on July 15th, but the company doesn’t currently have any plans to release it in North America. If playing by yourself is more your thing you can venture into the weird puzzle-platformer “Limbo“, or the cute yet challenging stealth puzzler “Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones“.

Larger hard drives are just good sense for everyone here: the consumer gets more space for an ever-expanding library of storage-intensive games, and the platform owner gets to further remove roadblocks towards making digital purchases. It’s practically been available on just about every platform known to man, but if you’ve somehow missed it, here’s your chance to grab a great platformer. According to the company, this was driven by “higher volumes of consoles sold, offset in part by lower prices of Xbox Ones sold.” Microsoft said it moved 1.4 million consoles in the fourth quarter compared to the previous year’s 1.1 million.

It did not clarify the exact contribution Xbox One made to this figure, opting instead to combine sales of the console with its predecessor, the Xbox 360. More becomes more and more important the more games you buy and play, meaning that Sony and Microsoft’s most valuable customers are going to be the ones clamoring for more space. Of course, it’s not such a big problem that I’ll have to reinstall Dead Rising if I find myself experiencing that particular urge, but it violates a certain collector strain that runs strong in gamers. As I write this with gritted teeth after realising that I paid for this game a week ago, it’s worth noting that Limbo is an absorbing, eerie game that showcases the series of ways in which to kill a young boy. We’re both doing really well, and I think Nintendo has a plan for the future–I don’t know what the NX is, but it’s great just to see the business being done.”
