Mark Zuckerberg Shows Off His Improving Chinese Skills With A 20 Minute Speech.

After wowing us with his Chinese speaking skills last year, the Facebook founder is at it again. After spending the last year working on a ‘dislike’ button, preparing to launch a satellite into orbit and revealing plans to open a school in California, the Facebook CEO still found time to brush up on his Mandarin. Zuckerberg has been in China for the past several days, and over the weekend took the opportunity to show off his Mandarin. “I just gave my first ever speech in Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing,” Zuckerberg wrote on his Facebook page on Saturday.

During the 22-minute speech, Zuckerberg discussed Facebook’s beginnings and the importance of persevering when faced with struggles, all while managing to elicit smiles and even some laughter from the audience. “This was also my first real speech in any language sharing how I started thinking about Facebook’s mission, what has kept me going through challenging times and what our mission means now looking ahead for our community of 1.5 billion people,” Zuckerberg wrote, later calling the speech a “pretty special” moment in his life. Zuckerberg’s previous efforts, while impressive for someone not living in China and coping with the demands of running a multi-billion dollar public company, were described as being akin to a seven-year-old child. In recent years, he’s also taken on a number of other yearly challenges, including wearing a necktie every day in 2009 and only eating meat from animals he had personally slaughtered in 2011. His speech on Saturday seemed to underline his eagerness to expand in China, despite the country’s ban on Internet companies like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. “There is a good Chinese saying, which says that if you work at it hard enough, you can grind an iron bar into a needle,” Zuckerberg said. “If you keep working hard, you will change the world.” Zuck isn’t about to step into a Chinese boardroom soon, if he could, but the fact that he can find the time to become suitably proficient with a challenging language like Chinese will give other would-be language learners a boost in their own quest.

Given the Chinese government’s increased crackdown on methods for climbing its Great Firewall internet censorship system, I wonder what VPN Facebook’s CEO uses to get Facebook to work in China?
