Is WhatsApp blocking rival links?.

The problem appears to be limited to Android and has appeared in the app overnight, without any notification or explanation. In what may sound a bit discriminating, popular messaging service WhatsApp has started blocking links within its chats that point to a competing messenger platform called Telegram.• Telegram attributed the issue to a recent WhatsApp updateUsers have reported that links of Telegram app sent via WhatsApp on Android appear only as text and not as cli… Telegram users took to Reddit to say that while they could still post URLs to Telegram.me in WhatsApp, the messages did not appear as hyperlinks and could not be clicked or copied into another app. Telegram gained popularity as an alternative to WhatsApp last year, following a major outage; it has also gained some infamy because its “Channels” functionality is reportedly favored by jihadi groups.

The behavior wasn’t exhibited on every device but it was consistent within devices, blocking both usernames and links to individual messages or chat rooms. The update has the same version number as a previously deployed update (2.12.367), but a Telegram volunteer confirmed that a new 367 update was deployed this morning. Telegram, while talking to The Verge, said that a silent update to WhatsApp seems to have broken these links, and a spokesperson said: “Typically after a media backlash, FB steps back and blames their intelligent filtering for the problem.

However, this is not shocking news, since WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and the social network in the past, was caught blocking URLs from torrent website Pirate Bay and other social networks as well. According to a report by The Verge, a Telegram employee that this issue is due to a update pushed out by WhatsApp yesterday that disabled links to the rival app.

We expect the same to happen this time as well.” Facebook have previous when it comes to blocking and censoring things, but in their defence, they haven’t made a comment about this yet (neither have WhatsApp), but we’re sure it’ll all be ‘resolved’ when they find ‘a glitch’ and there’ll be further updates. Facebook has previously said that its systems automatically ban certain links, without prompting, when the algorithm thinks that they might be being used for spam.

Telegram, which is available for Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Ubuntu Touch, Windows, OS X and Linux platforms, claims to have over 62 million monthly active users (May 2015). In 2010, Facebook faced criticism for blocking Pirate Bay links in the newly unveiled messaging system, after a long history of blocking similar apps on the News Feed.
