Wii U’s ZombiU coming to other consoles and PC

The best zombie game for Wii U is headed to PS4 and Xbox One.

A PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version of Wii U launch title ZombiU has been an open secret for months now, but Ubisoft has finally announced that it will be out on August 18 – with a slight name change to Zombi and a PC version to boot.On Ubisoft’s blog, the games producer Hélène Henry had this to say: “We knew from the beginning that maintaining the tension and feel of the original was one of the main challenges, as the way ZombiU was presented on Wii U can not be reproduced”. As you can see from the trailer the graphics do look a little better than before, but the real question is how the game will work without the Wii U GamePad. There’s also no mention of the game’s innovative two-player mode, where one person played a survivor and the other controlled the zombies attacking them.

The open world, first-person adventure takes a unique approach to zombie fiction, putting players in the shoes of a random survivor of an outbreak in London. What is probably the worst kept secret in gaming has been officially confirmed today, as Ubisoft have finally released an official statement confirming that the formerly Wii U exclusive ZombiU will be dusted off and optimised for Xbox One as simply Zombi.

The gameplay should still be strong enough on its own though, with the game having a permadeath feature where if you’re killed you play another character who has to go and get your equipment from the now zombified corpse of the previous survivor. Henry says that, rather than retool the multiplayer experience for new systems, “we decided to focus on the solo mode, as we believe this is where the ZombiU experience really lay”.

Whether these new versions will revive their interest remains to be seen, but in our original review we described it as the best survival horror game of 2012. When one of your survivors dies, all the resources they collected are gone as well… that is unless your next survivor makes it back to wherever your newly zombified former self expired and defeats it. Much of the tension in the original game grew out of the push-and-pull between rifling through your bag and checking the radar on your second screen while being mindful of undead interlopers on your TV.
