Cloud Lifts Microsoft First-Quarter Earnings, Layoffs Continue.

Microsoft’s stock was up 1.76 percent in regular trading. Microsoft posted mixed first quarter earnings for its fiscal year 2016, with revenues of $21.66 billion – a 7. percent year-on-year decline that still exceeded analysts’ estimates. For the quarter ended September 30, Microsoft reported non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $0.67, which beat the Street by $0.10, and showed a 3% year-over-year (YoY) increase. At present, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock is soaring; it is trading up 10.52% at $53.08, as of 11:13 AM EDT today, near the 15-year high of $55 in 2000. The Intelligent Cloud segment grew 8% (14%) to $5.9 billion as Azure revenue doubled, and sales of core server products also grew 9% in constant currency.

But, they make the argument that they did perform better than the overall PC market because the Windows 10 launch spurred PC ecosystem innovation and helped drive hardware mix toward premium devices. Microsoft beat reporter Mary Jo Foley explains at ZDnet, “Microsoft has been working to streamline its search and advertising business business for months”. Although Microsoft’s single-digit share of the smartphone market remains persistently low, there’s little chance of the company ceding the market completely to Apple iOS and Google’s Android mobile operating system, said Gillett. But the Surface Book is its first full-fledged notebook PC, competing directly with its Windows hardware partners, including Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and Dell.

Microsoft’s Cloud Business: As Microsoft shifts from a PC-based company to more cloud-based, analysts are closely watching Microsoft’s cloud business as an indicator of future growth. Though Microsoft said customers have downloaded Windows 10 on 110 million PCs so far, Microsoft is largely missing out on revenue from those upgrades as a result of the free promotion. In addition, Microsoft’s cloud-based Dynamics customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning software suite grew by 12 percent. Windows OEM sales dropped 6 percent, or “what you expect when you give Windows away for free”, Gillett said, referencing the free Windows 10 upgrade promotion. Ukrainian artist Aleksander Milov was behind the creation of the new Vader statue, using the old statue as a basis, and merely replacing the head with Vader’s helmet and transforming Lenin’s coattails into Vader’s cape.

Even to this day, a quarter century after the fall of the USSR, there are reminders everywhere of Lenin and the communist living Ukrainian citizens were forced to live under. Located on the premises of a factory in the Black Sea port city, the Lenin statue was slated to be taken down alongside many other remnants of the Communist past. The law spelled the end for hundreds of statues of Lenin across the country, but as Odessa’s newly transformed monument no longer depicts the Bolshevik leader, it will now be spared. But the Dark Lord of the Sith is a rather more popular figure in Ukraine, where Western culture is being embraced and the Soviet past erased from history – a transition that outrages Russian Federation. One fan dressed as Vader tried to join last year’s presidential race but couldn’t register when he wouldn’t reveal his real name and identity papers.

A granite statue of Lenin in the heart of Kiev was famously toppled by enthusiastic protesters during the three-month revolution that ultimately ousted a Moscow-backed leadership in February 2014.
