‘X-Wing’ And ‘Tie Fighter’ Re-Release: What You Need To Know

X Wing and TIE Fighter getting digital re-releases.

The special edition digital releases through GOG.com will mark the first time the two games have been available digitally and will be a boon to anyone who cannot get the original DOS versions running.

For right now, though, GOG is only prepared to reveal that both Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: TIE Fighter are slated to hit their virtual storefronts soon. The happy revelation comes to us by way of the GOG forums, where a pair of threads revealed that the Special Editions of both games will come to the service on October 28.

X Wing was first released in 1993 and is set shortly before A New Hope whilst its sequel TIE Fighter was released a year later in 1994 and is set just after the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back. This is big news, because as far as I know neither game has been re-released for modern systems prior to this, and since both games require one megabyte of EMS, and you probably don’t know what one megabyte of EMS is, having ready-to-run versions for a tenner each is manna from Heaven. TIE Fighter in particular became a fan favourite for its unusual decision to start players off in the role of an ordinary pilot in the empire’s fleet, sat at the helm of one of the most fragile ships in the Star Wars universe.

And while that’s obviously a joke—I have no idea if you know what expanded memory is or not—the simple fact that you don’t have to dick around with it is more than worth the price of admission. There are other games coming as well, including The Secret of Monkey Island, Knights of the Old Republic, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and the excellent Sam and Max Hit the Road. Good Old Games was supposed to announce their partnership with Disney on Tuesday, but unfortunately some clever forum digging pulled up the details a day early. But rather than hide it, the digital distributor came forward to say, “You got me.” Unfortunately, GOG has yet to reveal when either of the games will hit their digital distribution platform, only that they are coming.

That in and of itself, though, is a big deal because Star Wars: TIE-Fighter and X-Wing have never been available outside of their DOS releases in the ’90s.
