Target Begins Rolling Out Apple Watch To U.S. Stores This Week.

Target Corp. will become the biggest retailer to offer the Apple Watch, throwing support behind a device that’s fighting for mainstream acceptance this holiday season. The Apple Inc. product will debut in some Target stores this week, before reaching all of its locations by Oct. 25, the Minneapolis-based retailer said on Friday.

The chic discount retailer, which already sells plenty of Apple products like the iPad and iPhone, said it would start offering the watch online starting October 18. In August, Best Buy BBY 0.22% began selling the device at some stores and has accelerated the rollout to other locations based on its early success there.

Those efforts are part of a deepening collaboration with Apple AAPL 0.12% : Best Buy is currently updating its Apple shop-in-shops at hundreds of stores, including new fixtures and more display tables for phones, computers, and tablets. The announcement mentions a price of $599, so it’s likely they’ll have steel models with Sport Bands as well (no mention of Editions, so that’s unlikely).

Joly said demand for the watch has been strong both in stores and online, and Target is hoping to get a piece of that action in time for the holidays. The chain has about 1,800 stores in the U.S. and could be a key proving ground for Apple as it tries to show that the product, which costs $349 to $599, is more than a niche gadget. Apple reports its earnings at the end of this month, so we might get some official numbers then, though we’ll have to wait until January for any indication of holiday sales success.
