You’ll never guess what Xbox REALLY think about the PS4

Microsoft to discount Xbox Music Pass by 68 percent for Pi Day.

I’ve been thinking of trying out Microsoft’s Windows 10 Technical preview but was a bit discouraged by Microsoft’s warnings to anyone thinking about taking the plunge. Microsoft says it’s speeding the pace of Windows 10 preview builds for those on the “Fast” track, so anyone afraid of bugs may want to slow things down.Microsoft is migrating several functions formerly reserved for its Xbox One SmartGlass mobile app into the Xbox app for Windows 10, as it increasingly ties the Xbox One console to PCs and mobile devices.Ever since Microsoft revealed its HoloLens augmented reality (AR) head-mounted display (HMD) earlier in 2015, many have assumed that this was the company’s answer to virtual reality (VR) HMDs such as the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus.

The company cautions that the preview is only for people who “really know your way around a PC and feel comfortable troubleshooting problems, backing up data, formatting a hard drive, installing an operating system from scratch, or restoring your old one if necessary.” And you’re told you need to “know what an ISO file is and how to use it.” I am very experienced with PCs and familiar with ISO files, but I’m not particularly anxious to go through the hassles. For one day only, it will lower the price to $31.41, the first four digits of pi. (If you write the date the American way, this year Pi Day is extra special: 3/14/15.) Fortunately, the offer is good for new subscriptions and renewals of existing subscriptions. SmartGlass is a “second screen” app that was originally written for Windows Phone, allowing it, for example, to control aspects of a connected Xbox One. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer recently stated as much to Eurogamer. “I don’t think we’ve locked ourselves out,” Spencer replied when asked about a potential VR HMD at GDC 2015. “We’ve looked at a mixed reality space that we could do with Hololens and think about it as a unique set of features and technologies to enable, that doesn’t preclude us from doing anything in the VR space either from a first-party or partnership perspective. Gabriel Aul, an engineering general manager at Microsoft, wrote on Twitter that the company will be advising users to move to Slow updates if they want a lower risk of problems. “Still considering new rings, but for now we’ve decided to try to increase pace of Fast, and that means letting people know first,” Aul wrote.

I’ve used Morpheus, I’ve used Oculus, I’m going to see more of the demos here. “The conversations between all of us in this space remain strong, a lot of them look at Xbox, and obviously with Oculus on PC and other things, and the discussions are great as all of us look forward into where this space is going to go. But Microsoft allows you to play both a la carte and streaming radio stations on the PC, Android, iOS, and Windows Phones, plus the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Spartan is a completely separate browser from Internet Explorer, with a new rendering engine, a streamlined interface, built-in annotation features, and a little help from Cortana. The games industry is always a place for innovation.” Back in December 2014 VRFocus reported on confirmation from several developers that were working with an Xbox One VR HMD. In the meantime, you can enable Spartan’s rendering engine in Internet Explorer, and check out some other Windows 10 tips and tricks while you’re at it.

Microsoft added that it would also discount the Einstein Brain Trainer HD Windows Phone and Windows Store apps in honor of March 14, which also happens to be Einstein’s birthday. The company has also said it’s considering streaming in the opposite direction, from the One to the PC, to take on competing technologies from Nvidia and Valve.

One advantage of Xbox Music, however, is its integration with Microsoft’s digital assistant, Cortana. (Personally, however, I find Google Play Music and its integration with the hands-free Google Now voice control very useful for the car, where I listen to the most music). And if the preview version of Windows does crash or destroys anything, it will do so within the virtual machine, so you’re not risking the rest of the software and data on your Mac. After Microsoft discounted Office 365, Xbox Music, Xbox Live Gold, and Skype to ludicrous levels over the holiday, it looks like discounts are back on again. Even though there are Mac versions of most popular PC programs, there will always be some software — particularly within enterprises — that runs only on Windows.
